Perhaps I’m imagining things, but another photograph I found
in my aunt’s collection now seems to line up quite handily with the picture I shared yesterday of my mother as a toddler. Unfortunately, neither photograph
had been labeled—though my grandmother was generally handy at keeping track of
those things—but now that I’ve found a few details about where my aunt was
born, let’s just call this an educated guess.
There, sitting on the steps in front of the same yard she
had played in probably more than a decade previously, was my mother. Behind her, on the
porch, sat my aunt. While the pillar looks about the same as in the previous
photo of the McClellan home in Tampa, Florida, the greenery had certainly grown a lot in those years.
While it would be hard to guess their ages, especially in
the crouched positions they assumed, I’d say the girls were a bit older than
they were in the photograph I found of them in Denver. Perhaps this scene was from the late
1930s. Maybe the family took the southern route in returning to the east from Colorado, just before heading to their final destination in 1939:
Columbus, Ohio.
What do you think? Does this porch pass for the same one as the 1926 photograph of the McClellan home in Tampa?

Most definitely the same porch. Same wooden steps. Same doric column. A tree in both pix. Ding Ding Ding -- we have a winner.
ReplyDeleteTa da! I'll take it! Now...if only I could confirm the location precisely. Unfortunately, Google maps street view is not cooperating with that house address...if the building is even there now...
DeleteThere are even the same number of rows of brick between the top of the porch floor and the base of the column. I too, think this photo was taken in the "same place" as the other one. Different but equally cute doggy from the one in the wagon though. :)
ReplyDeleteEven the "courses" of brick (the "bond pattern" aligns) and matches exactly.

Wow, Iggy, you took precision to new heights with this comparison! You have me totally convinced!
DeleteGlad you spotted the girls' canine buddy there. I have no idea who this one was, nor the one in the wagon--although the wagon dog came closer to the only family pet I knew about: JoJo, the Scottish Terror--um, Terrier. ;)
Has to be the same porch...same column, same brick, same steps.
ReplyDeleteI sure was hoping--though I am not as good at noticing details as some people are. Y'all have given me some confidence that these two pics are for the same place.
DeleteKinda makes me want to go through all the rest of them and see if anything else matches up. I'm thinking this is the home on Jefferson Street in Tampa for sure!
Yes most certainly the same house. From when we lived in Florida plants grow fast! Iggy nailed it with the bricks! :)
ReplyDeleteDidn't know you had lived in Florida, Far Side. What a contrast to where you are now!
