Whatever expedition was captured in yesterday’s post—camping
or fishing—while I have no way of knowing whether it was a first, I’m certain
it wasn’t the last. There are several sets of pictures in Bill Bean’s
collection showing good times coupled with successful fishing expeditions.
I don’t even have any way to determine whether any of the
men in yesterday’s series of photos found their place in today’s picture.
What I do like about this photograph, however, is the fact
that the developer left his imprint. Even better, the imprint included a date.
The man on the far left is the only one who looks like he could have been in the previous set. The shape of his mouth is similar to that of the older guy with the shin guards. Same guy 20 years and 20 pounds later?? Possibly.
ReplyDeleteWas Bill in some kind of hunt club that would have brought together people who were not friends outside the club?
Wendy, the idea of a hunt club is a good possibility. Or perhaps this is just a different side of Bill's family.
DeleteWhatever, it does look like they had a grand time.
Looks like a Goose Hunt, the guy on the right has a rifle. I didn't recognize anyone from yesterdays photo in this one:(
ReplyDeleteFar Side, you have such a good eye for detail. I had hardly noticed! Now that makes me want to go back to the original scan and blow it up on PhotoShop and see if I can make out those details for myself!
DeleteSee, I told you my eyesight wasn't that great! :)
Yes, those are definitely "birdies". :) Is that Bill straining to hold the catch up on the left?
ReplyDeleteDecember 1939? Hmmm... given the date, I suspect the white birds are Snow Geese and/or "specklebellies" (Greater White-fronted Geese) that fly the Pacific Flyway (and past Alameda).
It could be, Iggy--although I suspect that Bill would more likely be fulfilling the role of shutterbug for this expedition.
DeleteI'm not putting too much stock in the date the photo was developed. I don't know about you, but I never was that quick on getting my film developed, so I tend to think others might have that same tendency...
These fellows must have also been among Bill Bean's friends, or in his "hunt club." I don't see anyone from the previous pictures. So many choices of hat styles! But they don't really seem like what I know as hunting caps.
ReplyDeleteGood point about the hats, Mariann. And it does seem this is a different group of men.
DeleteWhatever the group was, it certainly shows me how much of an outdoorsman Bill Bean was. Meeting him in his later years, I would never have known, if it weren't for these photographs.
