It happened to mention that Dewey's son lived in Chicago at the time. Other than that, I was puzzled as you were, since I knew Dewey had New England and Washington DC associations, not any with the midwest.

Somewhere in that epic three day celebration, he stopped in a local photography studio to have his likeness taken??? I can hardly imagine it--I don't know about photo techniques back then, but I'm sure any copies of that picture would be intended to distribute far and wide. How long it would take to produce those copies, I don't know. Although it might have been an advertising gimmick for the photography studio. I get the feeling that the whole visit was more about Chicago than about Dewey, anyhow.

Since I went through wondering about all those same questions as you did, I thought that perhaps Jarmuth had obtained the photo from elsewhere and mass produced it in advance of their gala. Just a guess. But it is not beyond possibility to have it actually taken there. Whichever way it was actually produced, there is no question that Chicago gave the man a rousing hero's reception!

And how interesting that you had blogged about the Admiral's flagship. Neat post, Iggy! And what a coincidence! Amazing how these puzzle pieces fall together!Jacqi Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03471698670217119444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5034998384799920884.post-88776487657255070942012-02-13T11:04:46.993-08:002012-02-13T11:04:46.993-08:00The George Dewey Elementary School was/is located ...The George Dewey Elementary School was/is located at 638 West 54th Place, Chicago, IL 60609-5211 (now the George Dewey Child Parent Center). His rank insignia is "obsolete" (according to your wiki-link) which threw me off.

What's funny is that I had blogged about the man's famed ship which lies in a museum in my home town.

http://intenseguy.blogspot.com/2010/03/tale-of-two-ships.html

What I wonder is this:

What was the occasion for him being in Chicago? One finds an elementary school named for him, as well as other buildings in Chicago.

I found this link - "On May 2, 1900, Admiral George Dewey, arrived in Chicago to dedicate the recently completed Sanitary and Ship Canal."
http://encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/300018.html

"It would be a three-day affair, from
April 30 to May 2, 1900."

Source of quote - http://dig.lib.niu.edu/ISHS/ishs-1967autumn/ishs-1967autumn-245.pdf

Did this photo somehow influence Frank's future career selection in any way? :)Intense Guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08441598926026727682noreply@blogger.com
