You are absolutely right: start now, so you prepare the way to have less work toward that goal later.Jacqi Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03471698670217119444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5034998384799920884.post-91405564523308105812018-01-29T16:49:46.714-08:002018-01-29T16:49:46.714-08:00Great post, Jacqi. When my sister and I were taking care of our deceased aunt's effects, we obtained the services of a company which arranges estate sales online. The man running the business has a standard speech about how the younger generations don't value all the collectibles and accoutrements that meant so much to my aunt's generation--and how that seems to be such a surprise to those in that generation still with us who are trying to downsize. The younger generations often prefer a more simplified lifestyle, when it comes to "things."

Unfortunately, our beloved papers that comprise our genealogical research often fall into that same category--useless things, clutter that takes up needed space. Being able to revise how we pass along our life's research is a needed shift in outlook, if we hope to have that next generation be willing to preserve what we've started (or inherited from those researchers before us).Jacqi Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03471698670217119444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5034998384799920884.post-88086750619103265432018-01-20T17:36:01.601-08:002018-01-20T17:36:01.601-08:00When I worked at the Historical Museum we accepted...When I worked at the Historical Museum we accepted any and all records many times when there was no other known relatives and they would have been tossed away.
I am back to transcribing the Farm Diaries from my husbands Grandfather I am in 1925 now. It will eventually be a book....I hope:)Far Side of Fiftyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07995757632158408442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5034998384799920884.post-21889454646797290582018-01-20T11:17:55.484-08:002018-01-20T11:17:55.484-08:00Jacqui, I certainly agree with you about breathing...Jacqui, I certainly agree with you about breathing life into our genealogy research to help the next generation understand the value. This is a hard subject but important! I blogged about this not too long ago (and I talk a lot more about it in my book, "Planning a Future for Your Family's Past"). http://climbingmyfamilytree.blogspot.com/2017/10/family-history-month-will-you-bequeath.html Everyone needs a genealogical will!Marian B. We should all be thinking about this and trying to nail down (and write down) what our plans are.

At the same time, we should all be working toward a clear organization method that keeps our files orderly and compact. Many younger people are rejecting large homes on the grounds of economy, maintenance, and environmental responsibility. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you be more willing to accept a collection of genealogy files on paper or on disk or even on a cloud service? Try to make it easier for the intended recipient to say yes.
Marianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08873605766046172611noreply@blogger.com
